Bishop State now in its forty-third year of training watchmakers in beautiful Mobile, Alabama where the near by beaches are the whitest; the fishing is at its finest, one of the fastest growing cities in the south, and the mother of Mardi Gras.
The watchmaking program located on the Southwest Campus of the college is most unique in relationship to other programs around the country due to its short term classes. Students may receive a certificate of completion after successfully completing two semesters or nine months of training. These classes cover a wide spectrum of repairs from minor repairs such as replacing crystals, crowns, stems, and gaskets to complete over-hauls of both mechanicals and quartz timepieces. The programs facilities are fully handicapped accessible and the staff caters to the needs of students with disabilities. A maximum of ten students are accepted for the Spring semester starting in the first week of January each year.
Tuition and fees for students living in Alabama run $2,340 for the entire program. Books are generally around $115 and personal hand tools that are required run approximately $500. Non-resident tuition is 2.0 times the normal tuition rate unless you reside within fifty miles of the college.
Bishop State has its own in house veteran’s assistance department (251-405-7019) that is directed by Mr. Jerry Shirey. Jerry is a retired state veteran’s administrator who is also a local lapidarist /jeweler and has taken classes in this department.
